Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, has confirmed his return for the 2026-27 season with the Washington Capitals, marking his 22nd season. Ovechkin signed a one-year contract valued at an average annual salary of $4.25 million, which includes a $1 million base salary and a $3.25 million signing bonus, with potential earnings up to $9 million if he plays at least 10 games.

This announcement followed a significant offseason for the Capitals, who made several moves to enhance their roster after missing the playoffs last season. General Manager Chris Patrick stated that the team's acquisition strategy was not solely influenced by Ovechkin's decision, yet he acknowledged that their roster improvements helped inform Ovechkin's choice to return.

The Capitals traded for St. Louis Blues winger Jordan Kyrou and signed Buffalo Sabres winger Alex Tuch in a sign-and-trade deal, both of whom are expected to add significant offensive talent. They also secured Boone Jenner from Columbus and signed several other players, indicating a commitment to building a competitive team.

Patrick emphasized the importance of adding top-six forward talent to strengthen the team’s playoff aspirations. Ovechkin expressed excitement about the changes, highlighting his love for the game and the desire to compete for another playoff berth.

The Capitals finished last season with 95 points, narrowly missing the playoff cut, and Ovechkin's leadership remains crucial as the team looks to regain its competitive edge this coming season. The Capitals' core includes notable players like Tom Wilson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Jakob Chychrun, with new additions and young talent poised to make an impact.

With Ovechkin returning, the Capitals aim to revitalize their roster and reclaim their place among the NHL's elite teams.
