The Washington Capitals have made notable roster changes during the recent free agency period, aiming to enhance their competitiveness for the upcoming NHL season. They signed veteran forward Boone Jenner to a four-year, $23 million contract, adding depth and leadership to their lineup after his tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he played 13 seasons.
Jenner recorded 38 points last season and brings experience in both center and left wing positions, contributing significantly in faceoffs. The Capitals also signed depth center Josh Dunne and forward Jonny Brodzinski to one-year contracts, both at $850,000, in a strategy to bolster their organizational depth.
Dunne played 34 games for the Buffalo Sabres last season, while Brodzinski played 55 games for the New York Rangers, indicating the Capitals are looking to strengthen their forward options. Additionally, the Capitals faced some departures, losing Trevor van Riemsdyk to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who signed him to a two-year, $8 million contract.
General Manager Chris Patrick confirmed that there is still cap space and a roster spot available for captain Alex Ovechkin, who is an unrestricted free agent and considering his future with the team. Patrick indicated that improvements made to the roster could influence Ovechkin's decision on whether to return for a 22nd season.
The Capitals have been actively reshaping their team, which includes trades for high-profile players like Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, suggesting a focused effort to return to playoff contention after missing the postseason last year.
