The Washington Capitals have made significant roster changes to enhance their competitiveness for the upcoming season, particularly with the return of captain Alex Ovechkin. According to Daily Faceoff, Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time leading goalscorer, signed a one-year deal valued at $4.25 million, confirming he will be back on the ice this season.
The Capitals have bolstered their forward depth by signing Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, alongside depth forwards Jonny Brodzinski and Joshua Dunne, each signed to one-year contracts at $850,000. Brodzinski, who played for the New York Rangers last season, brings experience and a career faceoff percentage of 50.1, which the Capitals need to improve upon.
Additionally, 34-year-old defenseman Justin Holl was signed for $900,000 to fill in after losing a defenseman to injury. These strategic signings are seen as moves to support Ovechkin's play rather than to replace him, as noted by Tyler Yaremchuk from Daily Faceoff.
The Capitals are looking to create a competitive environment for Ovechkin to thrive in as he approaches the next chapter of his career.
