Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins signed Evgeni Malkin to a one-year contract extension, checking off a significant item on their off-season to-do list. Malkin, who had a resurgent season with 61 points in 56 regular-season games, will earn $5.5 million, with potential bonuses bringing it up to $9 million.

With Malkin and captain Sidney Crosby secured for next season, Dubas now faces decisions regarding other pending free agents like Egor Chinakhov, Ryan Shea, and Anthony Mantha. Tyler Yaremchuk from Daily Faceoff noted the importance of being smart with the $37 million in cap space available, emphasizing the need for the team to avoid overcommitting to players just because they can afford to do so.

Carter Hutton added that Crosby's willingness to consider one-year deals sets a tone for the team's financial strategy moving forward, as they aim to build a competitive roster while planning for the future post-Crosby and Malkin.

The Penguins must balance immediate roster needs against the risk of ending up with unfavorable contracts down the line.
