The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have advanced to the Eastern Conference Final in the AHL's Calder Cup playoffs for the first time since 2014. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, they will face the Toronto Marlies, with the series starting on May 27 at 7:05 PM in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
This opportunity was secured after a dominant 8-1 victory over the Springfield Thunderbirds in a decisive Game 5, as reported by Yahoo Sports. Forwards Tristan Broz, Ville Koivunen, and Rafael Harvey-Pinard each scored two goals, while goaltender Sergei Murashov made 26 saves, resulting in a playoff save percentage of .943.
The Penguins previously won their Atlantic Division final series against the Thunderbirds 3-2. The matchup against the Marlies is a best-of-seven series, and the Penguins are looking to build on their recent success, showcasing the development of their top prospects.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette highlighted that this achievement not only marks a significant milestone for the WBS Penguins but also reflects the strength and depth of their roster, which has impressed throughout the playoffs.
The first two games of the series against the Marlies will be held in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, followed by games in Toronto, and potentially more games back in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton if necessary.
