PITTSBURGH, PA - MARCH 31: Justin Brazeau, number 16 of the Pittsburgh Penguins, celebrated his second period goal against the Detroit Red Wings at PPG Paints Arena on March 31, 2026. As the Penguins gear up for the 2026-27 season, analysts are examining players who may experience regression following a season of exceeding expectations.

Justin Brazeau, one of the Penguins' free agent signings last summer, achieved a career-high 17 goals and 34 points. However, Brazeau's production dipped significantly after a strong start, scoring only five goals and 14 points in the last 40 games of the season, raising questions about his potential for next year.

He's noted for his late-blooming trajectory in his career and while he has the physical tools, there are uncertainties about whether he can replicate or surpass this season's output. Egor Chinakhov, another player on the radar, showed promise after an in-season trade but also faces questions about consistency and shooting percentage, which was notably high at 17.3% after joining the Penguins.

Analysts note that while Chinakhov has the talent to become a top-line player, there remains a possibility of regression, though increased shot volume may mitigate this. Bryan Rust, a valued player for the Penguins, has shown remarkable development throughout his career.

Approaching mid-30s, Rust has continued to produce near 30 goals a season, but analysts caution that age may soon impact his scoring ability, as players often experience a decline in production during their mid-30s.

The Penguins' roster and performance strategy for the upcoming season will heavily depend on these players' trajectories, as the team assesses potential changes.
