The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins faced a tough challenge in Game 2 of their AHL playoff series against the Springfield Thunderbirds. After leading 3-0 at the end of the second period and holding a 3-1 advantage late in the game, the Penguins saw their lead evaporate.
Springfield pulled their goalie and scored two late goals to tie the game, forcing overtime. Ultimately, the series is now tied 1-1 as it heads to Massachusetts for the next two games. In Game 2, the Penguins dominated early, outshooting the Thunderbirds 30-14 after two periods.
Sergei Murashov's playoff shutout streak ended at 139 minutes with a shorthanded goal against, marking Springfield's fourth goal of the night. Of those, only one was scored at even strength. Despite the disappointment, standout performances came from Bill Zonnon, who scored a power-play goal, and Tristan Broz and Avery Hayes, who also found the net.
Hayes' goal was assisted by Rutger McGroarty and Harrison Brunicke. The Penguins now face a pivotal Game 3, reminiscent of their previous round where they split home games before bouncing back on the road against Hershey.
The response in this next game will be crucial for their playoff journey.
