The Washington Capitals have made significant moves to strengthen their roster ahead of the 2026-27 NHL season. They signed defenseman Jacob MacDonald to a one-year, two-way contract worth $850,000 at the NHL level.
MacDonald, a 33-year-old veteran, previously had a strong season in the AHL and brings valuable experience to the Capitals' defensive lineup, having played 135 NHL games and 357 AHL games. In another key development, team captain Alex Ovechkin confirmed his return for a 22nd season after signing a one-year contract with an average annual value of $4.25 million.
His commitment is crucial for the team's leadership and offensive strategy, especially after a disappointing season where the Capitals fell short of the playoffs. Ovechkin, who recorded 32 goals last season, expressed excitement about competing for a playoff spot.
Additionally, the Capitals have aggressively revamped their roster, trading for notable players like Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, while also signing Boone Jenner and others to enhance their lineup. Meanwhile, former Capitals forward Connor McMichael has filed for salary arbitration after being traded to the St.
Louis Blues, highlighting the ongoing changes within the organization.
