Alex Ovechkin expressed uncertainty about his future after the Capitals' season finale against the Blue Jackets, indicating he is 'pretty sure' it won't be his last game. Ovechkin, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, stated that family and the team's direction will play crucial roles in his decision-making process.
He mentioned that his children are asking if he will stay, and he hopes to return, saying, 'We'll see.' Ovechkin completed the season with 32 goals and 32 assists, while contemplating the physical demands of playing at 40 years old.
He noted the importance of the Capitals' ability to make the playoffs and compete for the Stanley Cup as critical factors in deciding his future. He joked about wanting to hear from General Manager Chris Patrick that the team wants him for two more years.
While Ovechkin hinted that he would probably not play for another NHL team, he left the door open for a potential return to the KHL if he doesn't remain in Washington. The Capitals have over $30 million in cap space, with several players set to become unrestricted free agents, which could influence Ovechkin's decision on returning.
He emphasized that he wants to be part of a playoff-caliber roster, as he appreciated the young talent stepping up this season and reiterated that his health and family considerations are also paramount in his decision-making process.
Ovechkin's future remains a pivotal storyline for the Capitals as they head into the offseason, with his decision expected to impact the team's direction significantly.
