Alex Ovechkin has confirmed his intention to continue his NHL career, stating he's 'pretty sure' he will return for a 22nd season with the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin's comments came after the Capitals' final game of the season, where they failed to qualify for the playoffs.
He expressed that his family supports his decision to play again, and he hopes to make a final decision soon, indicating that his children are eager for him to return. This season, Ovechkin led the team with 32 goals and 64 points, pushing his career total to 1,687 points, which ranks him 10th all-time in NHL history.
Meanwhile, the Capitals are bracing for significant roster changes as they head into the offseason. General Manager Chris Patrick has indicated that retooling the roster is a priority, with a focus on acquiring a scoring winger through trades rather than relying on a thin free-agent market.
In addition, the Capitals have sent several young prospects, including Ilya Protas and Ivan Miroshnichenko, back to the AHL's Hershey Bears to aid in their development. These players recently contributed to the Bears clinching a playoff spot.
Lastly, defenseman Rasmus Sandin is facing an uncertain recovery from a knee injury sustained in the last week of the season, as he awaits test results to determine the severity of his condition, which may require extensive rehabilitation over the summer.
