The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins advanced in the AHL playoffs with a decisive 8-1 victory over the Springfield Thunderbirds in Game 5, clinching the best-of-five series 3-2. Tristan Broz was a standout performer, scoring two goals and adding two assists, while his linemate Ville Koivunen also contributed two goals and an assist.
Rafael Harvey-Pinard, returning from injury, scored two goals as well. Goaltender Sergei Murashov made 26 saves on 27 shots, improving his postseason record to 6-3. The Penguins will now face the winner of the Cleveland Monsters and Toronto Marlies series in the Eastern Conference final, marking their first conference final appearance since 2014.
The Penguins will host Games 1 and 2 of the Conference Finals due to the elimination of other contenders, ensuring home-ice advantage as they aim for a championship run. The team rebounded from a poor performance in Game 4, showcasing their resilience and skill under pressure, which coach Kirk MacDonald described as a significant turnaround.
