The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins advanced in the AHL playoffs by defeating the Hershey Bears 4-1 in Game 4 last night. Harrison Brunicke scored the game-winning goal in the second period while shorthanded, following up on a shot from Gabe Klassen to net a rebound.
Goalie Sergei Murashov excelled with 36 saves on 37 shots, thwarting Hershey's efforts to make a comeback. In the third period, Mikhail Ilyin set up Ville Koivunen for a goal, showcasing his creativity and vision, which has started to shine in the AHL playoffs.
Ilyin has accumulated three points in four playoff games, drawing comparisons to Jake Guentzel's early AHL success. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are now set to face the Springfield Thunderbirds in the next round, with Game 1 scheduled for May 12th at home.
Springfield recently upset the top-ranked Providence team, making them a formidable opponent. This playoff success is a significant turnaround for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, which struggled in the previous seasons and now looks to build on their momentum against a determined underdog.
