Peyton Kettles, a defensive prospect for the Pittsburgh Penguins, successfully moves past a significant shoulder injury that hampered his previous season. Kettles signed his entry-level contract with the Penguins on November 24, 2025, just days after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder.

The injury had been a culmination of wear and tear, including a previous dislocation and labrum tears. At 6-foot-6 and 196 pounds, Kettles embraces a physical style of play, stating he wants opponents to fear coming into his corner.

After attending the Penguins prospect development camp, Kettles reported that his shoulder no longer hurts and he is focused on strengthening it. He acknowledged some confidence issues returning to physical play but felt reassured during the camp, especially after delivering a hit that resulted in a boarding penalty.

Penguins director of player development Tom Kostopoulos noted that Kettles will have the summer to build his strength after a challenging transition back into competitive play. Kettles had started the 2025-26 season with the Swift Current Broncos before being traded to the Kelowna Rockets, where he underwent surgery and missed most of the season.

He made a return to the lineup for the Memorial Cup, playing three games, which he found significant for his preparation for the upcoming 2026-27 season, stating it was good to avoid a long absence without games.

Kettles expressed confidence about being ready for the next season.
