The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Joshua Roy to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for defenseman Maksymilian Szuber, as reported by TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie. Roy, 22, played three NHL games with the Canadiens during the 2025-26 season, while spending most of the year with the AHL's Laval Rocket, scoring 23 goals and 45 points in 57 games.
He also contributed two goals in five Calder Cup Playoff games. Szuber, 23, spent the entire 2025-26 season with the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners, where he netted 11 goals and 27 points in 65 games and made his NHL debut with the Arizona Coyotes in the 2023-24 season.
Both players are set to become restricted free agents on July 1. The Canadiens had hoped for more from Roy, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft and had a notable junior career, including winning back-to-back gold medals with Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
Szuber, a sixth-round pick of the Coyotes in 2022, has shown consistent performance in the AHL, and he is expected to compete for a depth spot on the Canadiens' blue line during the upcoming training camp.
This trade is part of the Canadiens' strategy to enhance their defensive prospects while moving on from a young forward who has yet to solidify his place in the NHL, as noted by multiple sources including Daily Faceoff and Yahoo Sports NHL.
