The Edmonton Oilers are under scrutiny as the NHL trade deadline approaches, particularly after losing their last three games before the Olympic break, leaving them with 64 points and a slim four-point lead over the ninth-place Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference.
According to The Hockey News, general manager Ken Holland hinted at the possibility of moving forward Warren Foegele to address a surplus of wingers, although he may choose to retain him to see if he can find his scoring touch.
Meanwhile, Allan Mitchell from The Athletic suggests the Oilers need to acquire a right-shot defenseman for their second pairing and a reliable third-line center, but their limited cap space, projected at over $2.8 million, could complicate these efforts.
The situation is further complicated as forward Adam Henrique is expected to return from long-term injury reserve soon, and the Oilers have been trying to move left winger Andrew Mangiapane, who carries a $3.6 million cap hit, in a cost-cutting deal.
While there were initial thoughts of not pursuing a defenseman, recent insights indicate a shift in focus towards strengthening their defense corps, especially with players like Kasperi Kapanen and Josh Samanski stepping up before the break.
Any potential deal for a defenseman could require packaging Mangiapane with a draft pick or prospect to free up cap space, or separate deals to address the team's needs.
