The San Jose Sharks have placed former Edmonton Oilers winger Jeff Skinner on unconditional waivers for the purpose of termination, allowing the team to clear his $3 million cap hit. According to Oilers Nation, Skinner, who is 33 years old, has had a challenging season, appearing in 32 games and scoring six goals and 13 points.
Drafted seventh overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2010 NHL Draft, Skinner had a notable career start, averaging over 30 goals per 82 games in his first eight seasons. After being traded to the Buffalo Sabres in August 2018, he reached a career high of 40 goals in his first season there but faced inconsistency that led to the Sabres buying out the final three years of his eight-year contract.
As interim general manager of the Oilers, Jeff Jackson signed Skinner to a one-year, $3 million deal before last season, where he contributed 16 goals and 29 points while averaging a career-low 13 minutes per night.
However, he was a healthy scratch for the Sharks' last 10 games leading up to the Olympic break and played only five playoff games, scoring one goal and two points. If he clears waivers, Skinner will become an unrestricted free agent for the second time in his career.
