Connor McDavid was far from his best in the Edmonton Oilers' first-round playoff exit, largely due to a fracture in his foot and ankle area suffered during Game 1 against the Anaheim Ducks. Fans are pointing fingers at head coach Kris Knoblauch and general manager Stan Bowman for the team's continued struggles, reflecting on a series of poor managerial decisions made during the McDavid era.

Among the eight worst decisions cited by The Hockey Writers, the Oilers' trade of Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome stands out, as Strome only recorded 14 goals and 36 points over 100 games with Edmonton, while Eberle continues to produce at age 35.

The trade of Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson also raises eyebrows, as Hall was a top winger at the time, while Larsson was seen as a second-pairing defenseman. Milan Lucic's seven-year, $42 million contract is another significant blunder, with Lucic's offensive production declining sharply after his first season.

The 2016 draft also haunts the organization, as the Oilers selected Jesse Puljujarvi fourth overall, only to see Matthew Tkachuk taken two picks later. Most recently, the signing of Jack Campbell to a five-year, $25 million deal has not resolved goaltending issues, as he posted a 3.41 goals against average in his first season.

Darnell Nurse's eight-year, $74 million contract is viewed as one of the worst in the NHL, complicating the team's salary cap situation. Additionally, a failed trade during the 2025-26 season that saw Stuart Skinner dealt for Tristan Jarry, who recorded a 3.86 GAA, has further exacerbated the Oilers' problems.

Losing both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg to the St. Louis Blues has also stung the organization, as they could have provided valuable support alongside McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Overall, the analysis from The Hockey Writers reveals that the Oilers have made a series of missteps under management that have hindered their ability to win a Stanley Cup during the McDavid era.
