Connor Bedard, the Chicago Blackhawks' star center, is expected to miss the start of the upcoming NHL season following shoulder surgery. According to ESPN, Bedard underwent the procedure on his left shoulder and is projected to take approximately four months for a full recovery.
This timeline indicates that he will miss at least the first month of the 2026-27 season, which is significant as he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft and led the team last season with 75 points in 69 games.
In addition to Bedard's injury, the Blackhawks have made roster changes, welcoming new winger Cole Smith on a three-year deal. The Hockey Writers reports that Smith, who brings physicality and experience to the team, is eager to contribute to the Blackhawks' bottom-six line after the departure of Ilya Mikheyev to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawks bid farewell to former defenseman Jordan Oesterle, who announced his retirement after 12 NHL seasons. Oesterle was with the Blackhawks for the 2017-18 season, recording 15 points in 55 games.
Lastly, excitement surrounds prospect Xavier Villenueve, who has drawn comparisons to NHL star Lane Hutson due to his offensive skill set as a defenseman, indicating potential for significant contributions in the future.
Villenueve, selected in the recent draft, believes his intelligence and skating ability can help him overcome his size disadvantage in the league.
