The National Hockey League community is buzzing with comparisons between Chicago Blackhawks prospect Xavier Villenueve and current NHL star Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens. Villenueve, a 5'11" and 163-pound offensive defenseman, was selected by the Blackhawks in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson and Director of Scouting Mike Doneghey have expressed confidence in Villenueve's skill set, noting that if he were taller, he would likely be among the top prospects in his class.
Villenueve himself has stated that his intelligence and skating ability help him compensate for his size. He will be attending Boston University, where he will develop his skills further under coach Jay Pandolfo.
The Blackhawks are hopeful that Villenueve can fill the offensive defenseman role that they are seeking, especially with uncertainty surrounding Kevin Korchinski's long-term future with the team. As Villenueve embarks on his collegiate journey, the next two years will be crucial in determining his trajectory in the NHL.
