The Carolina Hurricanes celebrated a significant playoff achievement during their series against the New Jersey Devils in 2002. After losing to the Devils in the 2001 playoffs, the Hurricanes entered the postseason with determination.
In Game 1, the Canes took an early lead with goals from Rod Brind'Amour and Erik Cole, and despite being outshot 26-9, goalie Arturs Irbe made 35 saves to secure a 2-1 win. Game 2 mirrored the first, with the Canes tying the game in the second period and winning 2-1 in overtime thanks to Marek Malik's shot redirected by Bates Battaglia.
The series shifted to New Jersey for Games 3 and 4, where the Devils dominated, winning both games, including a 4-0 shutout in Game 3. Facing a 3-1 series deficit, the Hurricanes turned to Kevin Weekes in goal for Game 5.
Weekes made critical saves, including an iconic stop known as 'The Save' in overtime, preventing the Devils from capitalizing on a rebound. The game ended with a goal from Josef Vasicek, allowing the Hurricanes to take a 3-2 series lead.
The Hurricanes then won Game 6, with Ron Francis scoring the only goal, and Weekes shutting out the Devils to win the series 4-2. This victory marked the franchise's first best-of-seven series win since relocating to North Carolina and their first series win since the Whalers swept the Nordiques in 1986.
The series was characterized by tight, low-scoring games, with all four victories coming by a single goal, including two in overtime. The Hurricanes' performance set the stage for future postseason success against the Devils, establishing a competitive rivalry that remains significant today.
This playoff run not only showcased the skill and resilience of the Hurricanes but also highlighted the importance of key players like Weekes and Cole, who played pivotal roles in their advancement.
