Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin has been diagnosed with a concussion following a heavy hit from Ottawa Senators defenseman Tyler Kleven during Game 4 of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series.

The hit occurred early in the second period, as Nikishin attempted to clear the puck but was caught off-guard by Kleven, resulting in him being slow to get up and visibly dazed. The Hurricanes confirmed his diagnosis and stated that Nikishin traveled back to Raleigh with the team, where he will continue to follow the NHL's return-to-play protocol.

While the hit was deemed clean, no penalty was assessed during the game, and no supplemental discipline is expected for Kleven. The Hurricanes went on to win the game 4-2, completing a four-game sweep of the Senators and advancing to the next round, which allows Nikishin some time to recover.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the timeline for his return, the additional time off could be beneficial, as it gives him roughly a week to heal before the second round begins. Nikishin had an impressive rookie season, contributing significantly to the team's defense, and his absence would lead the Hurricanes to likely rely on Mike Reilly as a potential replacement if he cannot play.
