Way back in July 2022, restricted free agent forward Matthew Tkachuk informed the Calgary Flames that he wouldn't be signing a long-term deal. This decision led to a significant trade with the Florida Panthers, where Tkachuk and a conditional fourth-round pick were sent to Florida in exchange for MacKenzie Weegar, Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt, and a conditional first-round pick.

Since then, the trade has evolved into a complex series of transactions. As of early July 2026, the Flames' return from the Tkachuk trade includes MacKenzie Weegar, who was later traded to Utah for Olli Maatta, Jonathan Castagna, and several second-round picks.

The original deal can now be viewed as Tkachuk and Mads Kongsbak Klyvo for Maatta, Huberdeau, Schwindt, Cullen Potter, Castagna, and three 2026 second-round picks. Complications arose when the Flames moved multiple picks in subsequent trades, further entangling the trade tree.

Notably, on June 23, 2026, the Flames traded several picks including the NY Rangers' 2026 second-round pick and a conditional first-round pick from Vegas to New Jersey for Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov.

This interconnected web includes assets from other trades, such as those involving Rasmus Andersson and Nazem Kadri, which have been folded into the Tkachuk trade tree. The current tally as of July 8 includes Tkachuk, Andersson, Kadri, Coleman, and various picks acquired from these trades.

The Flames have accumulated a significant amount from the original trade, demonstrating that despite the complications, they have benefited from trading prominent veterans. The ongoing complexity of this trade tree is likely to evolve further as the Flames continue to make roster decisions and potentially move additional veterans like Whitecloud.
