Kane narrows choice to Sabres or Blackhawks

According to reports, Patrick Kane is narrowing his free agency search down to two teams: the Chicago Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres. A return to Chicago would be about nostalgia and a chance to play with Connor Bedard.

However, if Kane chooses Buffalo, it will be about his love for the Sabres and playing in his hometown rather than money. Buffalo has about $5 million left in cap space after recent offseason moves, limiting their ability to offer Kane a lucrative contract compared to the Blackhawks.

Choosing Buffalo would mean Kane is willing to take less money to wear the jersey he grew up loving and play in front of family and friends. The fit is strong on the ice as well, with the Sabres having snapped their long playoff drought last season with a 109-point run and now gearing up for a Stanley Cup run.

They are linked to star goalie Connor Hellebuyck, which would be a significant improvement for the team. The Sabres traded Alex Tuch earlier in the summer, creating a void in their top nine. Even at 37 years old, Kane remains productive, having scored 57 points in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings last year.

His elite playmaking ability would enhance Buffalo's power-play unit. At this stage in his career, having already made his money and won championship rings, coming home to potentially win a cup with a competitive Sabres team could represent a storybook ending for the future Hall of Famer.
