The Winnipeg Jets have made significant roster moves recently, trading forward David Gustafsson to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Jack St. Ivany. According to Daily Faceoff, St. Ivany, a 26-year-old who was a fourth-round pick in 2018, is entering the final year of a three-year contract with an $850,000 cap hit.
He had a modest first pro season, recording seven assists in 20 NHL games while also spending time in the AHL. Meanwhile, Gustafsson, also 26, was a second-round pick in 2018 but spent the entire last season in the AHL.
This trade reflects the Jets' strategy to refine their roster ahead of the upcoming season. Additionally, the Jets have extended qualifying offers to young talents Cole Perfetti and Tyrel Bauer, keeping them under team control as restricted free agents.
Perfetti, a former top-ten draft pick, had a disappointing season last year with 32 points in 68 games but remains a key part of the Jets' future. Bauer, known for his physical play, is expected to continue contributing as depth.
The team also recently held its development camp, showcasing prospects including first-round pick Viggo Bjorck and defenseman Alofa Tunoa Taamu, the first player of Samoan descent drafted in the NHL, marking a historic milestone for the organization.
With ongoing speculation around the potential trade of star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to the Buffalo Sabres, the Jets are navigating a critical period as they aim to remain competitive in the league.
