Cheveldayoff discusses Hellebuyck's trade situation

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff addressed the media regarding Connor Hellebuyck's trade request and the complexities surrounding it. Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, officially requested a trade during the exit meetings after the 2025-26 season, but the details remained quiet until a public statement released by his agent in August.

Following Hellebuyck's suspension for not reporting to training camp, Cheveldayoff emphasized that there is no rush to finalize a trade, stating, 'I just want to get this right.' He noted that finding a trade partner willing to meet the Jets' high asking price for the star goaltender has proven difficult.

Cheveldayoff mentioned, 'We’ve been trying to make a trade that works for both sides for a long time now,' and acknowledged the challenges of aligning Hellebuyck's preferred trade destinations with the needs of potential suitors.

He clarified that while Hellebuyck is under contract for five more years, 'No doors are closed,' suggesting the possibility of his return to Winnipeg if circumstances change. Cheveldayoff also underlined the importance of keeping the Jets competitive, indicating that any trade must not only meet organizational needs but also support the current roster's ambitions.
