The Minnesota Wild have clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2015, marking a significant achievement for the franchise. They secured their postseason bid with a 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night, just 75 games into the season, compared to last year when they clinched on the final day.
Winger Ryan Hartman expressed satisfaction with the win, stating, 'We knew all we had to do was win a game and we're there.' This victory also highlighted the exceptional performances of Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy, who both reached the 40-goal milestone in the same game, making history as the first duo to achieve this feat for the same team in the same season and game period.
Kaprizov, who has a team-high 83 points, commented on the excitement of making the playoffs, saying, 'It's the best time of the year.' The Wild aim to break a playoff series win drought that extends back to 2015, having not advanced past the first round in their previous seven attempts since then.
With a record of 96 points and likely facing the Dallas Stars in the first round, the Wild are eager to capitalize on their strong season and the contributions of goaltender Filip Gustavsson, who has been a key factor in their success, according to coach John Hynes.
The Wild's commitment to contending was also demonstrated through Kaprizov's eight-year, $136 million contract extension, the richest deal in NHL history, solidifying their aspirations for a deep postseason run.
