The Washington Capitals made headlines during the 2026 NHL Draft by selecting Finnish center Oliver Suvanto with the 18th overall pick. Suvanto, who spent the previous season with Tappara in Finland's top league, recorded 11 points across 48 regular-season games and showcased promise at international competitions, scoring twice at the 2026 World Junior Championship.
In a roster reshaping move, the Capitals traded defenseman Declan Chisholm to the New Jersey Devils for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, accommodating Chisholm's request for more playing time while also adding valuable draft assets.
The Capitals are also actively exploring free-agent defenseman options due to Rasmus Sandin's ACL injury, which is expected to sideline him for a significant portion of the upcoming season. General manager Chris Patrick emphasized the need to strengthen the blue line, particularly with Sandin's absence.
Additionally, newly acquired forward Alex Tuch expressed excitement about joining the Capitals, reflecting on his previous experience in the 2018 Stanley Cup Final against the team, stating, 'if you can't beat them, join them.' Meanwhile, team captain Alex Ovechkin has prioritized winning another Stanley Cup over financial considerations, indicating his commitment to the team's success and expressing optimism about the offseason acquisitions.
Ovechkin's decision on his future contract is expected after returning from vacation on July 7.
