The Washington Capitals are facing a critical juncture in their season as they cling to fading playoff hopes. They are set to visit the Toronto Maple Leafs, needing a win to keep their slim chances alive.
Currently, the Capitals' playoff odds have dropped to 3.1 percent after failing to receive needed scoreboard help in recent games, according to reports. In a boost for the team, they recalled goaltender Mitch Gibson from the AHL's Hershey Bears after Charlie Lindgren missed practice.
Additionally, Ilya Protas, a 19-year-old center, is set to make his NHL debut against the Maple Leafs, having been called up after leading AHL rookies in scoring this season. Protas will join his brother, Aliaksei Protas, in the lineup, marking a significant moment for the family as they play together in the NHL for the first time.
Head coach Spencer Carbery is optimistic about the debut of Ilya Protas, who expressed excitement about joining the team amidst this crucial stretch of the season.
