The Washington Capitals are currently undergoing a youth movement as they prepare for life after Alex Ovechkin. Although Ovechkin has not yet confirmed whether he will continue playing beyond the current season, the team's front office is planning for both possibilities.
Recently, the Capitals signed Cole Hutson, their 2024 second-round draft pick, to a three-year, entry-level contract, marking a step towards integrating younger talent into the roster. Hutson, who is the younger brother of Calder Trophy-winning defenseman Lane Hutson, will be practicing with the team after arriving in D.C.
He is expected to wear jersey number 44. The Capitals are clearly focusing on building a future that will sustain the franchise post-Ovechkin, who has been a pivotal figure since being drafted in 2004.
This shift towards youth is critical as the organization looks to establish a new identity moving forward.
