In the 2025-26 season for the Washington Capitals, head coach Spencer Carbery's deployment strategies regarding captain Alex Ovechkin have come under scrutiny. Notably, Ovechkin had not started a single shift in the defensive zone until the 73rd game of the season against the Utah Mammoth, where he was given two defensive-zone starts.

Carbery explained that the decision to deploy Ovechkin in the defensive zone was influenced by media attention, stating, 'Because it became a story.' He emphasized his goal of setting Ovechkin up for success by maximizing his offensive opportunities, noting that Ovechkin starts more in the offensive zone than any other player.

Ovechkin, at 40 years old, finished the season with six defensive-zone starts, 198 in the neutral zone, and 305 in the offensive zone. In the game against the Mammoth, Ovechkin scored his 34th career hat trick, contributing to a 7-4 victory.

Carbery acknowledged that as the narrative around Ovechkin's deployment gained traction, he felt the need to address it to prevent it from becoming a larger issue. Statistically, Ovechkin's presence led to the Capitals achieving 50.3 percent of shot attempts and 50.7 percent of expected goals at five-on-five play, outscoring their opposition 50 to 40.

With Ovechkin potentially returning for his 22nd season, Carbery will need to continue finding ways to leverage Ovechkin's skills for the team's success.
