Aliaksei Protas revealed that no Washington Capitals players were aware of Alex Ovechkin's decision to sign a one-year contract extension until the announcement was made on July 2. Protas stated, 'I was waiting, just like everyone else.
Like all the fans, they kept asking me, but I didn't know until the very end.' The signing allows Ovechkin to return for his 22nd season in the NHL. Protas noted that Ovechkin's decision was influenced by the aggressive moves made by Capitals general manager Chris Patrick during the offseason, including the acquisitions of Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, Boone Jenner, and Vincent Desharnais, aimed at rebuilding the team into a Stanley Cup contender.
Protas expressed happiness for Ovechkin's return, saying, 'It's great that we signed so many skilled, top-notch players,' while also acknowledging the loss of several teammates like Brandon Duhaime and Trevor van Riemsdyk.
He emphasized the importance of moving forward with the new roster and expressed excitement about working with the incoming players. During the offseason, Protas has kept a low profile, focusing on family and training, while also participating in a Belarusian charity game and engaging with the Belarusian national football team.
