John Carlson is back in the DC area. The pending unrestricted free agent was seen with his former Washington Capitals teammate, Logan Thompson, as reported on an Instagram story by Thompson. This visit comes amid speculation that Carlson is interested in returning to the East Coast for the 2026-27 season.

Hockey insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned on the May 22 episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast that there is thought Carlson wants to go back east. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported that four or five teams in the East are interested in Carlson, hoping he becomes available on the free agent market.

While Carlson has not publicly indicated where he may land, he did express openness to returning to the Anaheim Ducks during his end-of-season media availability. He mentioned needing time to consider his options with his family.

Carlson's deep connections to the DC area are significant, as he and his wife, Gina, who grew up in DC, have built their family life there. They met in DC, married in Maryland, and had all four of their children in the area, even constructing their dream home in Chevy Chase after the Capitals' 2018 Stanley Cup win.

The Capitals could be one of Carlson's East-based suitors, as General Manager Chris Patrick has identified acquiring a right-handed defenseman as a top goal for the offseason. Despite recently re-signing Timothy Liljegren, the Capitals still need another defenseman.

With $31.4 million in available cap space, the Capitals are positioned to be competitive in the open market. In the 2022-23 season, Carlson recorded 60 points, consisting of 14 goals and 46 assists, making him the second-highest scoring defenseman among scheduled free agents and the fifth-highest scoring player overall, making him a sought-after player this summer.
