Washington Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick is considering changes to head coach Spencer Carbery's coaching staff following a disappointing 2025-26 season where the team missed the playoffs. Patrick stated, "I've got to talk to Carbs and see how we move forward from there," emphasizing the need for discussions with Carbery and the coaching staff after recent player meetings.
Carbery's assistants, Scott Allen, Patrick Wellar, and Kirk Muller, have been part of the staff since his hiring, with Allen overseeing a penalty kill that improved to the league's 14th best by season's end.
Despite this, the power-play unit, led by Muller, struggled significantly, ranking 25th in effectiveness at 17.8 percent, and was responsible for 11 shorthanded goals against. Carbery expressed frustration over the power play, yet showed confidence in Muller, stating, "We're all involved in [the power play]...
It's not a lack of effort". Given the overall performance of the coaching staff, Muller's position appears most at risk as the Capitals aim to reshape their approach for the upcoming season.
