According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, the Washington Capitals management has maintained open communication with Alex Ovechkin regarding his future in the NHL since the end of the last season. There is a good understanding of where things are trending, but all parties are ensuring that Ovechkin is completely certain before making any commitments.
While the specifics of his decision remain ambiguous, past comments from Ovechkin suggest that the front office anticipates his return for the 2026-27 season. Following the Capitals' regular-season finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Ovechkin expressed hope that it would not be his last game.
At the Capitals Breakdown Day, he stated, 'I'm pretty sure it's not my last game,' emphasizing that his decision will depend on the team's position for the next season, family considerations, and his physical condition.
Additional reporting indicates that Ovechkin's decision could involve retirement from the NHL or a farewell season. He mentioned in a Russian-language podcast that he would announce his decision in July.
Ovechkin has been actively maintaining his fitness, engaging in activities like padel and weight training with his wife and friend, and has also been seen playing soccer and volleyball during a vacation in Turkey.
He is scheduled to participate in the Russian Match of the Year, an annual charity game featuring NHL and KHL stars.
