In a surprising move, the Vegas Golden Knights have fired head coach Bruce Cassidy and replaced him with John Tortorella, as announced on Sunday. This decision comes with only eight games left in the regular season, following a 5-4 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals, marking the team's third consecutive loss and sixth in their last seven games.

Cassidy, who led the Golden Knights to their first Stanley Cup title in 2023, leaves with a record of 178-99-43 in the regular season, making him one of the most successful coaches in franchise history.

General manager Kelly McCrimmon acknowledged Cassidy's contributions but stated that a change was necessary as the team aims to improve and prepare for the playoffs. Tortorella, who has a coaching record of 770 wins and previously led the Tampa Bay Lightning to a Stanley Cup in 2004, is known for his intense coaching style and has not coached in the NHL since being fired by the Philadelphia Flyers last season.

This is the second mid-season coaching change for the Golden Knights, recalling their decision to replace Gerard Gallant with Pete DeBoer in January 2020. The implications of this coaching shakeup could significantly impact the team’s performance as they approach the postseason, with many questioning whether Tortorella's style can adapt to the modern NHL landscape.
