Elias Pettersson's name has emerged in trade discussions, particularly with the Pittsburgh Penguins, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast. Friedman suggested that a reunion between Pettersson and former Canucks winger Andrei Kuzmenko, who recently signed with the Penguins, could be beneficial.
TSN's Pierre LeBrun added that other teams believe Pettersson is available, complicating any potential trade with his contract, which has an average annual value of $11.6 million through the 2031-32 season.
Meanwhile, Canucks fans are mourning the closure of Sportsnet 650, which has been a primary source of Canucks coverage, as Rogers has shut down multiple radio stations, cutting 230 jobs across affected networks.
This closure impacts fan engagement and access to Canucks commentary. Additionally, Pettersson is on the verge of breaking into the top six in all-time scoring for the Canucks, needing only 42 points to surpass Thomas Gradin.
Despite past struggles, Pettersson's contributions have been significant, as he has amassed 508 points in 545 games. Lastly, the Canucks are officially in a rebuilding phase, having made several offseason moves including the addition of Paul Cotter, Luke Schenn, and Jamie Oleksiak on short-term deals.
The team has also traded Nils Hoglander and Marcus Pettersson for future draft picks, indicating a focus on long-term success.
