The Vancouver Canucks have recently made significant roster changes as they look to rebuild for the future. They traded defenseman Marcus Pettersson to the New York Rangers in exchange for a top-10 protected first-round pick in the 2030 NHL Draft.
Pettersson, a steady defensive presence, had a challenging season with the Canucks and waived his no-movement clause to facilitate the trade. In response to this trade, the Canucks signed defenseman Jamie Oleksiak to a two-year, $10 million contract, aiming to improve their defensive capabilities.
Oleksiak, noted for his size and experience, will provide veteran leadership as the team transitions. Additionally, Canucks GM Ryan Johnson recapped a busy first day of free agency, where he also signed Paul Cotter to a one-year deal worth $2.15 million, alongside bringing back Luke Schenn on a one-year contract worth $2.25 million.
Johnson emphasized a patient and strategic approach in his first offseason, focusing on low-risk, short-term contracts to help reshape the team without long-term commitments. These moves reflect the Canucks' commitment to building a competitive roster while navigating a challenging rebuild phase.
