The Vancouver Canucks have appointed Manny Malhotra as their new head coach, marking a pivotal change in the team's management and culture. Malhotra, who led the Abbotsford Canucks to a Calder Cup title in 2025, replaces Adam Foote, who was dismissed after one season.
General Manager Ryan Johnson emphasized that Malhotra's leadership and teaching skills will be crucial for the team's development, stating, 'Connection, consistency, and putting in place the proper foundation will be key for our group moving forward.' Additionally, the Canucks signed forward Ilya Safonov to a one-year, two-way contract, signaling their intent to strengthen the roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Safonov, who had a successful year with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL, will compete for a spot at training camp. This roster move, alongside Malhotra's hiring, reflects a broader cultural shift within the organization, aided by the new leadership of the Sedin twins as co-presidents.
Johnson noted that they are focused on restoring the franchise's identity and fostering a winning environment.
