Jim Rutherford announced he is stepping down as president of hockey operations for the Vancouver Canucks after next month's NHL draft. He will transition to an advisory role, having decided it was time to step away from day-to-day operations.
Rutherford noted that he has been contemplating this move for a couple of years, expressing that he feels bad to do so at a relatively young age. The Canucks concluded their season with a disappointing record of 25-49-8, leading to the firing of general manager Patrik Allvin.
The team is currently finalizing its search for a new GM, which has been narrowed down to five candidates, including Pierre Dorion and Ryan Johnson. Dorion's previous tenure with the Ottawa Senators saw the team achieve only one playoff appearance, while Johnson has been with the Canucks organization since 2013.
Additionally, the Canucks will select third overall in the upcoming NHL draft, marking their highest pick since 1999. This draft position presents a significant opportunity for the franchise, particularly given the depth of talent available.
As the team navigates these changes, there has been notable backlash from fans regarding the potential hiring of Dorion, raising concerns about the direction of the organization. Despite the disappointment of dropping from a higher draft position, the Canucks remain focused on leveraging the third pick to secure a foundational player for their future.
