The Vancouver Canucks are actively pursuing candidates for their vacant general manager position following a lackluster season. Notable candidates include Brett Peterson, currently the assistant general manager for the Florida Panthers, and Patrick Burke, the NHL's vice president of player safety.
According to Canucks Army, Peterson has been involved with the Panthers since 2020, contributing to the team's recent success, including back-to-back Stanley Cups. His background as a player agent and experience with Team USA at the World Championships make him a compelling choice.
On the other hand, Patrick Burke has a long history in the NHL, previously serving as a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers before taking on roles in player safety. Burke is recognized for his contributions to ensuring safety and inclusion in hockey through the 'You Can Play' project.
The Canucks have also spoken with other candidates, including former NHL players Shane Doan and Ray Whitney, as well as former Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams. The team is looking to finalize a new GM ahead of the NHL Draft Lottery scheduled for May 5, following a season where they finished with the fewest wins since the 1998-99 campaign, clinching the worst record in the NHL.
