Juraj Slafkovsky scored a hat trick, including the overtime winner, leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. This win, achieved just 1:22 into overtime, handed the Canadiens home-ice advantage in the best-of-seven matchup.
Slafkovsky's goals came on the power play, making him the first Canadiens player to record a playoff hat trick since Rene Bourque in 2014. The Lightning's Jake Guentzel had a critical high-sticking penalty late in regulation, which allowed Montreal to capitalize in overtime.
The Lightning's Brandon Hagel scored twice, while Darren Raddysh also found the net. Lightning coach Jon Cooper expressed frustration with the officiating after the game. In roster news, Dominic James was activated off injured reserve prior to Game 1, returning after an injury that kept him out since February 28.
James has played 43 games for the Lightning this season, contributing 15 points. The Lightning, who finished the regular season with a 50-26-6 record, now face pressure to bounce back in the series as they look to regain momentum in Game 2.
