The St. Louis Blues made a significant move by acquiring center Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks, trading away two first-round picks in the process. According to Deadspin, this trade, which involved the No. 15 and 29 overall picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, enhances the Blues' offensive depth and reflects a commitment to building a competitive team for the future.
McTavish, a third overall pick in the 2021 draft, had a slight dip in performance last season with 17 goals and 24 assists in 75 games, but he brings a pedigree that includes being a former captain of Team Canada.
As noted by Daily Faceoff, McTavish's name had been circulating in trade talks since the Ducks were eliminated from the playoffs, indicating a shift in his standing within the organization. Additionally, the Blues entered the draft holding four first-round picks, which allowed them to make strategic moves while focusing on a youth movement, ultimately selecting Tynan Lawrence with the 11th overall pick.
Lawrence, coming from Boston University, is expected to develop into a solid top-six center, with comparisons made to Montreal Canadiens center Phillip Danault, as reported by Bleedin Blue. General Manager Doug Armstrong emphasized the strategic decision behind acquiring McTavish, acknowledging the risk involved but also expressing optimism about his potential impact.
This trade signals the Blues’ focus on immediate competitiveness rather than solely on future prospects, aiming to bolster their lineup for the upcoming season.
