Sergei Bobrovsky expressed excitement upon joining the Toronto Maple Leafs after signing a three-year contract worth $7 million annually. In his first comments as a Leaf, Bobrovsky described playing for Toronto as a 'blessing' and emphasized the team's historic status, referring to it as the 'capital of hockey.' He reflected on his previous seven seasons with the Florida Panthers, where he won two Stanley Cups, and thanked the organization for his time there.
Bobrovsky noted that he initially hoped to stay in Florida but acknowledged that the franchise had decided to move in a different direction after they traded for Jacob Markstrom. He is expected to be the starting goaltender for Toronto, alongside backup Anthony Stolarz and promising prospect Artur Akhtyamov.
Bobrovsky will wear number 72, which was graciously given to him by rookie Gavin McKenna. General Manager John Chayka praised Bobrovsky for his consistency, durability, and championship experience, highlighting the importance of his addition as the Leafs aim to finally break their Stanley Cup drought.
Bobrovsky enters the season with an impressive career record, ranking seventh in NHL history for goaltender wins and tied for 15th in playoff victories.
