Dolan Gilbert is the Seattle Kraken's designated emergency backup goalie, or EBUG, a role that has recently gained significance in the NHL. Previously, EBUGs were local goalies who could fill in if both rostered goaltenders were unavailable, but with the new collective bargaining agreement, teams must now employ their own emergency replacements.
Gilbert, a 25-year-old from South Bend, Indiana, has a unique background, having played 10 games in Division III hockey before walking on at Michigan State, where he had limited playing time. His responsibilities extend beyond the ice; after practice, he works in the Kraken's research and development department, assisting with player portfolios.
The Kraken chose Gilbert for his friendly demeanor and compatibility with the team culture, and he has become a valuable asset during practices, often taking challenging shots. His experience highlights the importance of having reliable depth in goaltending as he navigates the dual role of a player and a staff member, balancing on-ice duties with administrative responsibilities.
