The New York Rangers have made significant moves in free agency, strengthening their roster by signing forward Oliver Bjorkstrand and acquiring goaltender Joonas Korpisalo. According to Forever Blueshirts, Bjorkstrand was signed to a one-year contract worth $4.5 million.

The 31-year-old has a track record of scoring 20 or more goals in six of his eleven NHL seasons, although he only netted twelve goals last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, with nine of those coming on the power play.

Bjorkstrand's versatility allows him to play across the lineup, serving as a potential placeholder for younger forwards in the system. The Rangers also traded Vincent Trocheck to the Utah Mammoth shortly after signing Bjorkstrand, indicating a shift in their roster strategy.

Additionally, the Rangers acquired Korpisalo from the Boston Bruins for a fourth-round pick in 2028 and forward Kalle Vaisanen. Korpisalo, who has 334 games of NHL experience, is expected to compete with rookie Dylan Garand for the backup role behind Igor Shesterkin.

His addition may signal a push for a more competitive season, especially following Shesterkin's injury struggles last season that contributed to the Rangers' poor finish. Korpisalo's $3 million cap hit for the next two seasons raises questions about the Rangers' long-term plans, especially given Garand's recent signing to a two-year contract.

Furthermore, the Rangers signed Joe Veleno to a one-year contract worth $1.2 million, filling a need for depth in their bottom six. Veleno brings speed and defensive capabilities, having played 61 games last season with the Montreal Canadiens.

These acquisitions reflect the Rangers' efforts to enhance their roster as they aim to improve on last season's performance, which saw them finish last in the Eastern Conference.
