The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a significant roster move by trading defenseman Jack St. Ivany to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for forward David Gustafsson. This trade was confirmed via the Penguins' official X account and marks a strategic effort to enhance their lineup as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
Gustafsson, who is a pending restricted free agent, spent the last seven seasons with the Jets organization, including a recent stint with their AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, where he recorded 10 goals and 32 points in 48 games during the 2025-26 season.
Meanwhile, St. Ivany played 20 NHL games with the Penguins last season, tallying seven points. Additionally, the Penguins have extended qualifying offers to seven players, including promising forward Egor Chinakhov, which reflects their commitment to building a competitive roster.
The decision to keep Chinakhov, who had an impressive performance with 36 points in 43 games after a mid-season trade, indicates the team's focus on retaining key young talent. As free agency approaches, the Penguins are also reportedly engaged in trade discussions, with speculation around potential moves involving other notable players, including superstar winger Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars.
