The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired center Hendrix Lapierre from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick, according to Yahoo Sports NHL. This move marks a strategic effort by the Penguins to enhance their offensive capabilities as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Lapierre, who has had a mixed career thus far, recorded 22 points in 51 games during the 2023-24 season with the Capitals and was a standout player on their AHL Hershey Bears team, contributing to a Calder Cup championship.

However, his performance declined in the 2025-26 season, resulting in a limited role and lower average ice time. Despite these challenges, Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas sees Lapierre as a player with potential who fits the team's desired profile of mid-20s forwards with NHL experience looking for a fresh opportunity to unlock their skills.

Lapierre's addition is expected to bolster the Penguins' depth, potentially allowing him to play as a center or on the wing, adding to a competitive forward lineup that includes Blake Lizotte and other prospects.

This acquisition is part of a broader strategy as the Penguins gear up for the 2026-27 season under new ownership committed to building a strong team with the necessary resources.
