The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In exchange, they sent goaltender Sam Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to Toronto.
General manager Danny Briere expressed that this move aims to improve the team's goaltending situation, pairing Woll with Dan Vladar for the upcoming season. Briere noted that while Ersson was a valued teammate, it was time for him to seek a change of scenery.
Woll, 27, has been with the Maple Leafs for five years, showcasing a more consistent performance over the past seasons. Last season, he had a 3.34 goals against average and a .899 save percentage over 39 games, despite the challenges faced by the Leafs.
Additionally, Briere discussed the future of the Flyers, acknowledging that while they are progressing, they are not yet at the level of top contenders like Colorado or Carolina. He highlighted ongoing trade interests, particularly in acquiring a center.
As the Flyers prepare for the 2026 NHL Draft, they are focused on enhancing their roster with high-upside prospects, leveraging their multiple picks over the upcoming years. In a somber note, the Flyers community mourns the passing of former forward Kyle Calder at the age of 47, who played for the team during the 2006-07 season, recording 21 points in 59 games.
Calder's contributions are being remembered fondly by fans and former teammates alike.
