With the arbitration deadline fast approaching, the Philadelphia Flyers face critical decisions regarding restricted free agents Jamie Drysdale and Trevor Zegras. Both players have opted for salary arbitration, a move that secures their eligibility for new contracts while setting a firm timeline for negotiations.
Jamie Drysdale's arbitration hearing is scheduled for July 20, while Trevor Zegras's follows on July 22. The urgency of these negotiations is underscored by the fact that both players are coming off bridge contracts—Drysdale at $2.3 million AAV and Zegras at $5.75 million AAV—and are now projected to command significantly higher salaries.
Specifically, Evolving-Hockey estimates Zegras could receive a four-year deal with a $7.58 million AAV, and Drysdale a five-year contract at around $6.15 million AAV. The Flyers are tasked not only with negotiating raises but also with managing their salary cap effectively.
With both players potentially hitting unrestricted free agency in 2028, the Flyers must weigh whether to pursue long-term deals or stick with shorter terms. The backdrop of this negotiation includes the Flyers' failed offer sheet for Leo Carlsson, which may influence the players' expectations.
If negotiations fail to yield a contract before arbitration, it could signal deeper issues in the player-team relationship, as no player or team favors the arbitration process, which could involve publicly critiquing the players' performances.
The Flyers now have a narrow window to avoid arbitration and secure agreements that reflect the players' value without further complicating their salary cap situation.
