The Ottawa Senators have made significant roster moves ahead of the new NHL season. Veteran forward Claude Giroux has been re-signed to a one-year contract worth $2 million, potentially rising to $5 million with bonuses.
General manager Steve Staios noted Giroux's commitment to the team, emphasizing his leadership and experience, especially after scoring a career-high 35 goals in the 2022-23 season. Giroux's return is crucial for the Senators, particularly following the departure of captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers, which leaves a leadership void.
Meanwhile, the Senators have signed forward Xavier Bourgault to a one-year, two-way deal worth $850,000 at the NHL level. Bourgault, a first-round pick by the Edmonton Oilers in 2021, had a breakout season in the AHL, scoring 57 points in 70 games.
This signing reflects Ottawa's strategy to integrate young talent into their roster. Additionally, in a surprising move, Senators legend Daniel Alfredsson has left his coaching position to join the rival Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach, marking a significant shift in organizational dynamics.
Owner Michael Andlauer expressed disappointment at Alfredsson's departure while keeping the door open for a future return. Finally, the PWHL's Ottawa Charge will make the Canadian Tire Centre their permanent home starting in the 2026-27 season, highlighting the growing support for women's hockey in the region.
